Swing, slide, and what the post has to carry
Specifying an automatic gate starts with the driveway itself. A swing gate needs clear ground to arc into and generally suits a level or gently sloped approach, while a slide gate runs along a track beside the opening and works better where the drive is steep, narrow, or too tight for a swing to clear. Gate weight and leaf length drive the size of operator required, a heavier iron or steel gate needs more motor and a stronger track than a light aluminum one of the same width.
None of that holds up without the post and footing underneath it. A powered gate puts repeated mechanical load on its hinge or latch post every time it cycles, so that post gets set deeper and in more concrete than a standard fence line post. On top of the structural side, a proper install adds safety edges and photo eyes so the gate stops rather than closes on an obstruction, loop detectors set in the drive to sense a waiting vehicle, keypad or intercom entry for visitors, and battery backup so the gate still opens during a power outage.
